Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of medicine and healing, which has been practised and proved on millions of people over thousands of years.

Originally, acupuncture stimulation was achieved by cutting the skin with sharp Bian Stones, though other methods such as blood letting, pressure point massage, cupping or heating with herbs (moxibustion), were also used.

The Photonic Therapy method of treatment is to use light to stimulate the acupuncture points. In the 1960's when lasers were first invented it was found that low powered lasers could be used to stimulate acupuncture points and promote healing under certain conditions.

From the earliest times one can find references in histories of civilisations to the healing power of light. Still used today is the application of blue light to newborn babies to treat jaundice. Photochemistry is the use of light in the treatment of Rickets, and photo-dynamic therapy is the use of flourescent dyes combined with light, to treat skin diseases and some cancers. Lasers, even low powered ones are expensive and potentially dangerous, but by understanding how a laser and any other single coloured light effects tissue, and by understanding how stimulation of the skin produces neuro-physiological changes in the body, it is possible to explain how acupuncture works and to introduce a rational, scientifically advanced painless, safe method of treatment.
